08/05/2008 Construction on bakery begins
The building of a multimillion pound bakery in Manchester has begun, it has been revealed.
Located in the Openshaw district of the city, the 75,000 sq ft development by Greggs has started following a joint initiative between the food retailer, Manchester city council and New Easter Manchester.
In addition, it has received a £7 million grant from the North West Regional Development Agency.
Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester, said: "Greggs is a major local employer and this brand new building acts as a symbol of the company's commitment to the area."
He went on to report that the scheme is an "excellent example of joined-up regeneration" in which both private and public sector organisations work together in an attempt to help improve the lives of the local community.
Worth some £16 million, the facility is due to be completed this September.
In other news, Bury council and Ask Developments were recently given the green light to construct a £80 million development, including office space and a 110-bedroom hotel, in the centre of the Greater Manchester town.
