09/05/2008 Carillion in the frame for Newcastle project

A north-east developer is in discussion with Carillion regarding a £250 million construction contract in the region, it has been reported.

Contract Journal cites an unnamed source as identifying Carillion as negotiating about the Stevenson Quarter project, set to be implemented in the city.

The quarter is planned to be a mixed development and is likely to be one of Newcastle's most high-profile projects in the coming years.

Managed by Silverlink Properties, it will include three new-build offices and will involve the conversion of three listed buildings, also destined to be offices.

Meanwhile, retail space and a Royal Mail depot will also feature.

The publication's source states: "Talks are on-going and details of a cost plan are being hammered out.

"There's a way to go yet, but as far as I know Carillion is the only contractor in the frame at the moment."

Earlier this week, Thomson Financial reported comments from the construction and facilities management firm, which stated that conditions remained favourable throughout its main markets.
